School Residencies
Co-designed by the school representatives and OperaNJ’s Director of Education, the extended residency can be designed to fit your educational needs and may be musical, academic or social in nature and may run from one full-day to 10 weeks (either in-school or after school).
Examples of past residency work
- Kindergarten students imagined and created homes for Papageno in The Magic Flute
- 1st grade students created costumes for characters they’d yet to meet
- 2nd grade students created commercials, posters, and invitations as the Public Relations Department
- 3rd grade students studied how actors create characters and applied these skills to their social studies work
- 4th grade students became the school historians and created an overview exhibition
- 5th grade students applied set designer skills to their Western Expansion unit
- 7th grade students created an original opera entitled Struggle which dealt with issues of peer pressure, sibling rivalry and humiliation as they affect. The libretto and songs were written and composed entirely by students.
