Madama Butterfly

Madama Butterfly

February 2011

By Giacomo Puccini
Libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa based in part on the short story Madame Butterfly (1898) by John Luther Long, which was dramatized by David Belasco.

Puccini’s ravishing, sensuous Madama Butterfly, one of opera’s undisputed masterworks, recounts the well-known story of a young American naval officer who marries a Japanese geisha known as Butterfly. For him it is a diversion, but for her it is true love. After he returns to America she bears his child and expectantly waits for a joyful reunion that is not to be.

Madama Butterfly is filled with soaring, unforgettable melodies that deepen the tragic love story. If you’ve never seen it before, it’s a must. If you have…you know you’re likely to fall for it all over again. Presented in collaboration with New Jersey Symphony Orchestra and NJPAC.
