LOT 1: Miriam Schapiro. Court Jester, 2007. Digital print with hand lithography. 12 x 12 inches. Edition of 60. Collaborators: Kathryn Lyness, John C. Erickson. Published by Brodsky Center for Innovative Editions

Miriam Schapiro was one of the founders of the Feminist Art Movement in the 1970s. By using fabric patterning, she created an art form she called “femmage,” to reflect women’s experience. Combining such commonplace elements as lace, fabric scraps, buttons, rickrack, sequins, and tea towels she transformed them into sophisticated compositions that often imply multiple layers of both space and meaning. Her recent works, like this one, juxtapose intricately patterned abstract backgrounds with stylized human figures in motion--whether falling or dancing--made of brightly colored paper. The figures are presented theatrically as if on an imaginary stage performing an original production.

Tourmaline is a crystal silicate mineral compounded with elements such as aluminium, iron, magnesium, sodium, lithium, or potassium. Tourmaline is classified as a semi-precious stone and the gem comes in a wide variety of colors. The name, originating from the Sinhalese word “Thurmali,” was originally applied to different brightly colored gemstones found in Sri Lanka. Today the gem is mined chiefly in Brazil and Africa, while some has also been discovered in Maine and California in the US. Tourmaline is one of the most chemically complicated groups of silicate minerals. Belonging to the trigonal crystal system, it occurs in nature as long. Slender to think prismatic and columnar crystals that are usually triangular in cross-section. The style of termination at the ends of crystals is asymmetrical, called hemimorphism. Tourmaline is distinguished by its three-sided prisms; no other common mineral has three sides and is rarely perfectly euhedral.

LOT 10: Margo Humphrey. The Red Bed, 2005. Lithograph. 26.5 x 25 inches. Edition of 21. Collaborator: Chris Armijo. Published by Brodsky Center for Innovative Editions.

Margo Humphrey is an artist, printmaker and professor at the University of Maryland. Her work addresses her African American heritage from an autobiographical perspective. Seemingly naive depictions of objects and figures form a stylized iconography which is repeated throughout her work. Smart and bold, these scenes address a range of issues--gender, race, spirtuality and relationships--that speak to the human spirit. The imagery in The Red Bed depicts a theater stage setting, alive with the drama of an opera, shown from the point of view of an audience member in the first row. Her work is in many permanent collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
